Mr. Jagdish Gandhi & Dr. (Mrs.) Bharti Gandhi - Founders of the City Montessori School in Lucknow, India
After almost 50 years, a husband and wife team, devoted to educating and teaching universal brotherhood to children, have created world’s largest school in one city. The City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow, India has 20 branch campuses in the city of Lucknow and over 35,000 students. CMS was founded in 1959 by Mr. Jagdish Gandhi and his wife Dr. (Mrs.) Bharti Gandhi, M.Ed. Dr. Bharti Gandhi was a child psychologist. The couple were inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi.
Back in 1959 they started with only five students and three hundred rupees they borrowed. The school had a central message and Jai Jagat,(Glory be to the World) has been the CMS greeting and its vision. They focussed on a mission to inspire children and youth to care about the welfare of all people in the world.
CMS has an academic performance that is tough to match, with nearly 100 percent of the students passing with the first division or Grade ‘A’ marks. These results are in spite of the large student body with children from all over the city.
