It is common knowledge that honey is an amazing thing. It is good for our bodies both inside and out. We smear it on our skin and hair to make them feel softer, we add it to tea to help ease a sore throat, we dip chicken nuggets in it so we can trick out taste buds into thinking we’re really eating candy.  But you might not have known that honey was once used to preserve Dracula.

Vlad The Impaler Bram Stoker borrowed the name Dracula for his classic horror novel. The name Dracula originally belonged to a Romanian prince who was named Vlad Dracula. People called him Vlad the Impaler and the Prince of blood because he was famous for his habit of impaling prisoners on stakes while he was torturing them. Historians believe that Vlad Dracula was responsible for having over 40,000 people impaled in approximately two years. When he was killed in 1476, the same year he took the throne; it is believed that his head was placed in a jar that then filled with honey to preserve the head. The jar was brought to Istanbul as prove that the Prince of Blood was really dead. Origins of Honeymoon A honeymoon is supposed to be the romantic vacation a couple takes immediately after they get married. The word honeymoon actually comes from Norse culture. Apparently the Norse made a habit of drinking mead, which is made out of fermented honey, in large quantities during the first month of marriage. Mead is the oldest fermented drink, older then wine. Healing Properties Preserving the features of a bloodthirsty prince and sweetening tea isn’t the only thing honey is good for. It also has great healing power. People have been using it for centuries to soothe scrapes and cuts. Regular applications of honey can keep scar tissue from forming.
